Students Teaching And Reaching for Success

STARS is a summer day program offered by the Davidson County Education Foundation for rising seventh grade students in all Davidson County Public middle schools. The all expense-paid program began in 1995.2013 pic of STARS activity

Located on the campus of Davidson County Community College, the weeklong program in July provides opportunities for students to build skills in decision-making, self-confidence, leadership, community responsibility and cooperation.

Applications go out to all Davidson County Public Middle Schools each year in March. All applications must be legible. Guidance counselors work with students they think have high potential and could best benefit from the STARS Academy experience. A DCEF selection committee and the STARS Coordinator extends invitations to invited participants before the end of school.  STARS Academy is held in late July each year.

DCEF employs a coordinator to oversee general academy operations. Staff facilitators are present to bring leadership to small and large group activities, team building, individual conferencing, goal-setting and daily evaluation of activities. They all are currently employees of the Davidson County Public School System.

Having middle school staff present at STARS Academy has proven to be a very valuable part of the academy program. Then, during the following school year, the staff facilitators continue to communicate with the STARS participants from their school to reinforce lessons learned during their week at the STARS Academy. It is this consistency that keeps the lessons learned during STARS fresh in the minds of these young adolescents.146

Transportation to and from the STARS Academy is provided for participants.  The week’s activities include fun and innovative activities.  The daily hours are 8:30 am  – Noon.   Students and parents will be invited to a Closing Ceremony on Thursday of our week at 12:30 P.M. in the Reich Auditorium on the DCCC campus.
